Και αυτή η ιδέα, όμως, εγκαταλήφθηκε λόγω περιορισμών στο budget της ταινίας. Κάθε εμπόδιο για καλό, όμως, μιας και έτσι καταλήξαμε στην τελική μορφή της ταινίας: Ελαφρώς "loser" έφηβος ταξιδεύει κατά λάθος στο παρελθόν και όχι μόνο γνωρίζει τους γονείς του στην ηλικία του, αλλά πρέπει να τους κάνει να ερωτευτούν για να εξασφαλίσει hell kitty την ίδια του την ύπαρξη. Καθ'οδόν, εφευρίσκει το rock'n'roll και προκαλεί αθέλητά του και μερικές αλλαγές στην ιστορία. H ταινία κόστισε 19 εκ. δολλάρια, αλλά έβγαλε 20 φορές τα λεφτά της καθώς το παγκόσμιο box office της ξεπέρασε τα 380 εκ. δολλάρια, και θεωρείται ίσως όχι η πιο "έξυπνη", αλλά σίγουρα η πιο διασκεδαστική ταινία με θέμα το ταξίδι στο χρόνο.
Η συνέχεια της ταινίας γυρίστηκε το 1989 με τους ίδιους συντελεστές, και σημαντικά μεγαλύτερο budget λόγω της επιτυχίας του πρώτου μέρους. Μάλιστα, η δεύτερη και η τρίτη ταινία της τριλογίας γυρίστηκαν μαζί και απλά προβλήθηκαν με 6 μήνες διαφορά, κάτι που γινόταν για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του Χόλυγουντ. Το 2ο μέρος του "Επιστροφή στο Μέλλον" ξεκινάει κάπως πιο σκοτεινά από τον προκάτοχό του, για να εξελιχθεί όμως από τη μέση της ταινίας hell kitty και μετά σε ένα μεταμοντέρνο πείραμα: η ταινία αναδιπλώνεται στον εαυτό της, καθώς παρακολουθούμε την υπόθεση να εκτυλίσσεται παράλληλα με τα γεγονότα της πρώτης ταινίας και οι πρωταγωνιστές πασχίζουν μα μην αλλάξουν όσα έχουν ήδη συμβεί, αλλά και να διορθώσουν hell kitty όσα έχουν συμβεί hell kitty λάθος. Και μόνο το γεγονός πως ο Robert Zemeckis δοκίμασε ένα τέτοιο σεναριακό πείραμα σε μία mainstream ταινία hell kitty (η οποία είχε ήδη αποκτήσει εκατομμύρια φανατικών hell kitty θεατών στα 4 χρόνια από το πρώτο μέρος) είναι άξιο θαυμασμού. Η λεπτομέρεια με την οποία η ταινία ξαναεπισκέπτεται τις καταστάσεις του πρώτου μέρους είναι εκπληκτική, και ακόμα και αν κάποιος δει τις 2 ταινίες την μία μετά την άλλη όχι μόνο δεν βρίσκει "χάσματα" ή λάθη, αλλά μάλλον θα τις ευχαριστηθεί ακόμα περισσότερο. Η ταινία τελειώνει με τους 2 πρωταγωνιστές παγιδευμένους ο ένας στη δεκαετία του '50 και ο άλλος στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα στην Άγρια Δύση, και τις λέξεις "To Be Concluded" που μας φέρνουν...
...στο τρίτο μέρος της τριλογίας. Εδώ τα χρονικά "μπρος-πίσω" του δεύτερου μέρους περιορίζονται σημαντικά, και η ταινία στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της παίρνει τη μορφή μιας κλασσικής κωμωδίας-γουέστερν. Το τρίτο μέρος είναι ίσως το πιο αδύναμο από τις 3 ταινίες σεναριακά, αλλά δεν παύει να είναι μία διασκεδαστική περιπέτεια που δίνει ένα ικανοποιητικό κλείσιμο στην ιστορία των πρωταγωνιστών.
Η τριλογία του "Επιστροφή στο Μέλλον" άγγιξε σχεδόν το 1 δις δολλάρια παγκοσμίως σε εισπράξεις εισιτηρίων (χωρίς καν τα έσοδα από video, DVD κλπ). Ακόμα και ο πρώην πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Ρόναλντ Ρήγκαν είχε αποδείξει πόσο η ταινία είχε γίνει μέρος της λαϊκής hell kitty κουλτούρας, καθώς σε μία ομιλία του προς τον αμερικάνικό hell kitty λαό είχε χρησιμοποιήσει τη φράση με την οποία ο Christopher Lloyd "έκλεινε" την πρώτη ταινία: "Where we're going, we don't need roads!"

ΔΕΙΤΕ: Πολλοί θα ήθελαν να είναι στη θέση του Brad Pitt H Angelina Jolie είναι αδιαμφισβήτητα family guy fight από τις celebrities που ξέρουν πώς να κάνουν θεαματική είσοδο! Στην πρεμιέρα family guy fight του «Kung Fu Panda 2» στο Χόλιγουντ τα μάτια όλων ήταν στραμμένα επάνω της και στα πανύψηλα πόδια της. Το little black dress της Angelina είχε ένα σκίσιμο στο πλάι, που την έκανε όσο σέξι, όσο έπρεπε! Μην ξεχνάμε άλλωστε ότι είναι μητέρα έξι παιδιών! Πάντως, πολλοί θα ήθελαν να είναι στη θέση του Brad Pitt!
